1939 Ford Deluxe “WOODY” History Overview: Deluxe models were fully restyled for 1939, distinguished by a vertical stainless steel grille and clean front fenders with flush headlamps. Prices were reduced $5.00 across the board. Mechanical changes included column-mounted, instead of floor-mounted, gear shift and hydraulic, instead of mechanical brakes. Henry had finally given on the last point, three years after Chevrolet and 11 years after Plymouth. 1939 was also the last year the station wagons had suicide rear doors. For 1939 Ford station wagons continued to offer real wood for its siding. Ford Motor Company started building station wagons in 1935 at its wood processing plant in Iron Mountain, Michigan. This plant was later sold and continued to produce charcoal at this location. Interestingly, a cousin by marriage and a collaborator with Henry Ford in the wood processing plant was named E.G. Kingsford. “Kingsford” charcoal still grills our burgers, ribs, steaks, and chicken today.
