1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Model Year History Overview: Chevrolet was all new in 1955. It featured a beltline dip and wrap-around windshield inspired by the Cadillac Eldorado, Oldsmobile Fiesta, and Buick Skylark limited editions of 1953; the eggcrate grille had been inspired by Ferrari and was one of Harley Earl, the famous GM designer’s favorite touches. The grille however was not popular with the public, so the ’56 version was broader, brighter, and more conventional. Also new for Chevrolet was a 265 cid V-8 engine, the first V-8 ever for Chevrolet. It performed beautifully, putting out 162 hp at 4400 rpm, or 180 hp at 4600 rpm with Power-Pac (a four barrel carburetor and dual exhaust). This engine became the basis of all the great Chevy engines of the immediate future. In the ’56 Corvette it was bored to 283 cid and remained the best-known, best-loved engine of the period.
