1949 Ford “George Barris” Custom
2-Door Sedan

Model Year History Overview:

This car was originally customized in 1954 by George Barris.  It has extensive body work including a chopped top, rounded DeSoto grille.  In 1999 the car had a frame-off restoration adding an independent front suspension, small six carburetors, a Turbo 400 automatic transmission, a nine-inch Ford differential, new upholstery and gauges, air conditioner, power windows, power steering, chrome dash hand-signed by George Barris the creator of the Munsters Hot Rod and many more creative efforts that make him a legend in car customizing. The new two-stage paint and chrome illusion flames actually change color as it goes down the road.

In the late 1940s George Barris, along with his brother Sam, was one of the first California custom car builders.  Early on, the movie studios took note of Barris customs on the street and at the races. Subsequently, they came to George Barris to build custom cars for use in their films.  One of the first films George made cars for was called “High School Confidential”.  Movie success also led to customizing the personal cars of the stars.  In the late 1950s Revelle and AMT began making toy model kits of George’s cars.  Plastic model kits became the biggest selling toys at that time.  It is also on the list to become a “HOT WHEELS” model car.

Some of the most remembered Kustom Cras from George Barris's movie and television career include:

FLINT MOBILE (THE FLINTSTONES) - BEVERLY HILLBILLIES MODEL "A" TRUCK - KITT (the original TV car) - LIL DUCE COUPE (Of The Beach Boys fame) - THE BATMOBILE - GENERAL LEE (Dukes of Hazard orange #1 Dodge) - MONKEY MOBILE (The Monkeys)
