1956 Ford Fairlane - Sunliner Convertible

Model Year History Overview:

Ford retained its basic line for 1956 – Mainline, Custom, Fairlane, and Station Wagon.  This year the company tried to make safety a selling point.  Standard for all models were a dished steering wheel, breakaway rear view mirror, crash proof door locks; padded dash and sun visors cost $16.00 extra, and factory-installed seatbelts cost $9.00.  The public took to safety in a modest way early in the model year.  But the rush to install seatbelts overtaxed Ford’s supplier, and only 20 percent of the cars were so equipped.  Ford continued to stress safety for a few years, but after Ford failed to catch Chevrolet in ’56 a lot of dealers said performance was more important.

This car underwent a frame-off restoration in 1992.  This car really stands out with its pink and white interior and exterior.  The Continental kit also draws attention.  It’s an original car that has been restored to look, run and drive like new.  Everything works even the original radio.  The convertible top was recently replaced.  This car’s features include original Thunderbird 292 V-8 with four-barrel carburetor, original Ford-O-Matic transmission, power steering, power top, Continental kit, door handle guards, dual exterior mirrors, dual exhaust that exit through the rear bumper, backup lights,
rear antenna with a red reflector in the base, fender skirts, chrome wire wheel hubcaps, wide whitewalls (6 of them), and a windshield washer.
